Ultimate K-pop fan experience

THERE are countless types of conventions. From the conventional to the quirky, formal to outrageous, boring to out-of-this world. Regardless of the category, enthusiasts converge — usually yearly — either to commemorate an important milestone or just to revel in their craziness. And for the last five years, Filipino fans have been coming together to celebrate the thriving Korean pop (K-pop) phenomenon.

The 5th Philippine Kpop Convention held last Dec. 28,3013 proved to be the best and the biggest ever, with over 3,000 fans participating. The crowd was a lively mix of teenagers, young professionals, and even self-confessed fans old enough to be mothers of the teenyboppers. It was a mecca for the krung krung (unpredictably crazy) K-pop fans, with stands selling thousands of official and unofficial merchandise, fan club booths promoting their respective idols, and an array of activities that tickled the fancy of even the uninitiated.

Kpopcon is always held after Christmas, so it is able to attract teenagers armed with their holiday aguinaldo (money gifts) and can thus easily afford the entrance fee and splurge on the K-pop items. It was, to say the least, a box-office hit this year with fans lining up way before the SMX Convention Hall was open to the public.

SMX was divided into two areas:

For P200: the fans were able to enter the booths area and Second Stage (offered K-pop dance and vocal classes, various talks on K-beauty and Korean cosmetics, K-style and Korean street fashion, and Korean language 101).

tickets ranging from P450 to P5,000: access to the Main Stage where four K-pop groups Boyfriend, Lunafly, LC9

and A.Cian strutted their stuff.

The Second Stage offered K-pop dance and vocal classes, various talks on K-beauty and Korean cosmetics, K-style and Korean street fashion, and Korean language 101. There were also segments on culture, customs and etiquette, and a panel discussion on how to become a K-pop star. This was topped off by a free-for-all noraebang or Korean karaoke.
